Just a quick end of year update.

I have been working on quite a few new project that should all see light in 2012.

1.Composing an album with ....... sorry can say yet ,but it sounds great!

2.Composing a track for two pioneering artists.

3.Mixing the Roundhouse Short Circuit show from last year in both Stereo and 5.1 surround.

4.Working on new tracks and sound design for Ian Emes for his forthcoming show, more details later.

5.Working on the 23 minute film version of A Secret Life, the footage is a combination of Ian Emes and Mine. The music is mixed in 5.1.

6.Working with Haydn Bendal on a high profile Russian project. I am programming and sound designing.

The Complete Cathedral Oceans is a special four disc box set which contains all three albums in the Cathedral Oceans series (Cathedral Oceans [1997], Cathedral Oceans II[2003] and Cathedral Oceans III [2005]), together with a DVD of the associated art installation of the same name.

This DVD shows Cathedral Oceans images almost imperceptibly morphing from one to the next, accompanied by a 5.1 surround sound mix of Cathedral Oceans III. The accompanying hardback book contains dozens of these beautiful images along with passages from The Quiet Man.

It's with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.

Mick passing away has left a huge void, his musical influence run deep and wide, he will be sorely missed.

I had the privilege of working with Mick right up until December 2010, he was creating tracks for the next Dalis Car album a project that he initially developed with Pete Murphy and Paul Vincent Lawford in 1984. The new tracks sound like a natural evolution and are something quite special.

This has been on the cards for a while Avid who own Digidesign wanted to pull Pro tools under there own banner, I guess it makes sense, Digidesign is harder to say than Avid and 99% of users only mention Pro Tools when referring to the DAW.

I have been away for quite a while.

Some thoughts from Beirut:

The soldiers guard the entrance to the fun fair, that should stop the ticket touts!

The military presence grows daily, the soldiers are cool, they have things under control: no photos!

The scars of Lebanon run deep, this is a country with a long war history, everyone seems to want a piece of them!

Beirut downtown hides its scars well, the area was redeveloped and is the picture postcard that the tourists want to see; or is it? It may fit the brochures for a certain type of person, but not I, I like the scars beyond the downtown strip.Maybe because it shows character or culture, europeans like contrast and history; yes we also like the homogenized, sanitized shopping malls found in almost every city from Australia to the USA, however we soon bore with what we see: yes we like the convenience but I for one want more!

So give me the whole picture and let me decide, the veneer is such a shallow surface anyway.

Beirut is a great place as are it's people, good food, good coffee, good music, more good food, long history, what more could you want?

While I was away I read a few books (like one does). A book/s that I had taken on many trips/train/tube journeys but never got round to reading was Audous Huxley's "The Doors to perception & Heaven and Hell", I finished it, it was the perfect choice for this trip , if I also had Burroughs "Naked Lunch" then my reading would in many ways match my environment! Coach-roaches flying (yes flying) around.

I also finished The Wire's collection of articles in the form of the book "Undercurrents".

The temperature in Beirut was on occasions 40 degrees and on average 38! The electricity would work sporadically so you need a generator, and the water supply was not drinkable and was only delivered every other day.

Walking the 86 steps to my apartment carrying up to 10 litres of water in 40 degrees of heat was at first no fun, however like many things you do get used to it, what doesn't kill you etc.....

The one thing I never got used to was the traffic, it was extreme and without rule, the roads ran themselves, if you vehicle could move then it was road worthy! Up to 16 lanes of traffic and no rules, this was chaos and with taxies being the only real method of transportation you felt that you were putting your life in there hands on a daily bases .

The coastline that the Autostrad (motorway) ran along has a thick line of fog that follows you for miles!

A message from the music underground:

I have been in Beirut for that last 7 weeks and would like to convey a message from the underground musicians.

"We have been under the academic and ethnomusicologists microscope for at the least the last 10 years . Many films/documentries have been attempted however there has always been problems:

Academics don't listen, they interpret .They come with preconceptions of what Lebanese/Middle eastern music is and when they find something different it confuses them and this leads to the academics interpretation the music to fit there brief/fundings!

The ethnomusicologists are just as bad, they have there preconceptions and the music they encounter rarely fits what they expect and they to leave confused".

The answer to there problem is quite simple. Listen and to not interoperate, if this does not fit your preconception then that's your problem ,either learn from what is really happening or just leave! The artists are not happy with the way that you represent them.

I spoke to John about the German Underpass cover he told me that it was inspired by the german underpass road signs and that he got Peter Saville to make the cover for him.

Peter Saville is probably best know for his work with Joy Division & New Order, he has done quite a few classic covers in his time.

The Gorillaz were on a two day residency , the guys from Massive Attack were
also milling around.

I have spent most of this month video editing one thing or another ,the most important however is the 23 minute 5.1 surround sound version of 'A Secret Life'. This version is slightly different and plays as a complete piece, hopefully it will see some kind of limited release soon,

I am also working on a series of short files (very short) and quite a large collection of stills images.

The foundation of the images are taken from TV news from Austria, Australia, France and the UK.

The series working title is "Half Truths", below are some examples.

The Secret Life album with John Foxx & Steve Jansen.
This was a real labour of love, the idea came about after the 2005 Harold Budd Concert in Bright. Steve Jansen played a solo Tam Tam which sounded immense. John, Steve & myself decided that it would be interesting if we could capture the energy and sound of the Tam Tam and blend it with acoustic piano and electronics.
The recordings were done and slowly over time the project got finished and released in March.

A Secret Life is a work of exquisite poise, in the spirit of the Ambient albums that early Ultravox member John Foxx recorded with Harold Budd, Translucence and Drift Music. This album has a Budd connection, as it happens - it was after performing with him in 2005 that Foxx and former Japan drummer Steve Jansen began collaborating together, but the tracks they worked on remained unfinished until producer Steve D’Agostino completed them last year.

Foxx’s take on Ambient has always explored the uncanny space between quiet and disquiet, between vague unease and alien tranquillity. Jansen’s tam-tams fit it into this aesthetic extremely well. They have the curious quality of at once dominating the music - their ominous shimmer is the basis for all the tracks here - and of receding from attention, withdrawing into a background hum. Foxx’s piano is the lead instrument, but is used exceptionally sparingly, so that the delayed notes linger in the memory long after they are actually heard. Sometimes the piano makes you think of the (impossible) sound of a submerged church bell; elsewhere it has a piercing, crystalline iciness; at other times it resembles Satie figures being wistfully played in a Drowned World hotel suite.

Using only the sparsest of means - effects, glistening electronics and wind chime percussion in addition to the piano and tam-tams - the six tracks traverse a range of moods. Part 2 begins with a gently insistent piano refrain and ends in a landscape that is as harsh and windswept as 1990s Isolationism. Ultimately, though, this is an album which excels at the art of going nowhere. Like all the best Ambient, it suspends the agitations and urgencies of the everyday, drawing the listener into a state of near stillness where the most minimal perturbation is intensely felt.

In 2009, Sylvian collaborated with composer Dai Fujikura and a small ensemble on the audio installation “When we return you won’t recognize us,” located on Gran Canaria of the Canary Islands.

This composition was mixed by David in 5.1 surround . He asked me to master it for him which of course I was more than happy to do.

The piece is a minimalist instrument electro-acoustic composition, over 50 minutes in length , it loops perfectly and work extremely well as an installation piece, i for one hope that it makes its way into the Samadhi Sound catalogue, it is an excellent piece that I think many would appreciate.

Sweet Billy Pilgrim's 2009 Mercury Nominated album "Twice Born Men".

An Album that I co-mastered with Steve Jansen in January 2009.

I had recorded Tim for Steve Jansen's album 'Scope' the previous year and was highly impressed with both his vocal performances and lyrical content, so when the opportunity came
around to work with Tim again I was more than happy.

The album sounded great before we even started the mastering, very home grown organic, you could hear the bird song.

Released the same month as 'A secret life' and was well received.

As a part of the RUSHES Soho Shorts film festival 2009 I presented my film 'Violet Bloom" a four minute shot with music by sINGLE cYCLE rEORDER with piano by John Foxx. I created the film with footage shot in Paris at the end of 2008.

Also as part of the film festival the highly credited film director and animator Ian Emes presented his short which contains the music of D'Agostino/Foxx/Jansen, one of the tracks from "A secret life". This is an amazing piece of animation which works beautifully with the music, many thanks Ian.

This year was very productive especially for competing work with John Foxx. The album of spoken word and processed piano was completed early to mid April. I for one was very happy with the final mix and the mastering was as usual first class, Dallas Mastering of course.

September saw the release of David Sylvians "Manafon" an album that I mixed in 5.1 surround with David at Metropolis studios in Chiswick.
This is a beautifully performed and constructed album that sound great in stereo and amazing in 5.1 surround.

As for releases this is all for the year, however there are at least 5 project that are in motion including two sINGLE cYCLE rEORDER albums of which one is in 5.1 surround, one film soundtrack and two or three other project,these will all see the light of day throughout 2010.
